THE COLLAPSE OF HUMANITY
It is not so certain when it began. Hundreds of years ago the now inhospitable ruins were populated by a technologically-advanced civilization. Or so they say. At some point, strange static began to slip across the precipice between technology and the objective reality, beginning to spread like some sort of disease. Speculated by many, this is what caused the downfall of humanity. Some took it as a punishment for attempting to play God, while others believed that there was still hope for this broken world.
The static abnormalities spread like malware, hitching rides on moving objects and creatures, infecting all who pass and causing little of what was left of the past civilization and their machinery to come to life, which seemed to break the laws of physics themselves.
Surviving humanity roughly estimates the year as 2705. The world is a ruined landscape of fantastically large and wondrous buildings, structures, and cities lost to time and reclaimed by nature. Beautiful, somber, and silent, the ruins littering the face of the earth are breathtaking and inspire awe and wonder at how humanity must have looked before the collapse. But dwelling in that beauty is a horrific offspring.
Many buildings, objects, and animals across the world have been irreparably infected with errors.
One of them includes you.

ERRORS
In this world, some people have acquired Errors that break the laws of physics. Affected objects are often dark and staticky in appearance and some heavily errored objects have a writhing mass of static crawling over them. On people, Errors appear as occasional flickers of black static jolting across their bodies and disappearing into the air.
Some Errors are negative while others are positive and it is possible to mutate the nature of a human being through direct contact with black static or other special means. Some errors cause physical deformities and diseases while others are more like blessings that grant the affected person longevity or special abilities. Unnatural lifeforms, mutated and cursed with Errors traverse the landscape and take revenge on the humans that created them.
